Talmage receives the awards for being the Hawaii State Spelling Bee Champion!!
Happy to have a place to rest and snooze on Saturday, before the big day!
The view from our room at the ResortQuest hotel on Waikiki -- we didn't have to leave the room to see the gorgeous sunset (good thing, too, since Shan and I had had a terrible night's sleep the night before -- Teagan and Staci had rough nights Friday, with fevers and throwing-up, respectively! Made it hard to leave them!)
Ms Goeas (coach), Ms. Cameli (Talm's GT teacher) and Ms. Masukawa (former teacher for Teagan and family fan -- probably will be helping Talm with an independent study for Algebra next year) -- the school cheer squad - and lucky charms for Talmage! Ready to watch the competition and have their stomachs churn along with ours!
Taggart and Tanner were given activity bags at the hotel. Each bag had a deck of cards in it, so while waiting for the Bee to start, they took up residence in the lobby of the Paliku Theater to play some games. Of course, they eventually found that the card games were more interesting than watching the competition and spent 95% of the time in the lobby!

Talmage and runner-up Gabriel Salazar (after the spell off between the 3 who went out in the round before Talm won) at the reception afterwards. Gabriel's brother won the State Bee 5 years ago and is now a freshman at MIT -- his family knows how to do this too!! Talmage's comment on all this (given his chance to say anything!): "Bob." Profound, huh?!
Watch the National Spelling Bee May29th and 30th on ESPN and then ABC. More details to come!

That must have been an absolutely thrilling trip. Terrific pictures of Talmage the Champ as well as the cheering section and the professional gamesmen. Congrats to one and all. Will I be able to get the Bee on the TV at BYU? Sounds like a lot of acronyms to me! Much love, Mom/Grandma PenGwen

Good job Talmage! I can still see you boys studying the dictionary at the family table in your home when we visited. We miss all of you!
